The Distinctive UWI Graduate

As an educator, I ensure that in our business we are producing satisfactory products, distinctive UWI graduates. Students must be technically equipped, morally sound, and globally and culturally engaged. They must have a healthy sense of their strengths and weaknesses, and be compassionate members of society.
When students see educators taking advantage of new technology and methods in and out the classroom, it inspires them to do the same. Our blended courses, and new assessment methods are revitalizing the engineering solutions we deliver.  Students think out of the box, and recognize the world outside of the traditional textbook and white board. This is the graduate of the 21st century.

These methods became very useful for the emergency remote teaching during the Covid 19 pandemic.  We are grateful that we were a bit more prepared than some may have been.

Here I have included one student's review of my teaching and learning  methods.

Students may become extremely overwhelmed with grades and forget to experience the many other positive experiences offered. For some students, their entire world is engineering, and their worth is in a grade. It is our job to remind them of the greater experience, and their greater responsibility to society.  This is an interview I did for students in the Department exposing some detail of my life journey.
Students requested I do a talk with them about preparing for exams. I provided a few tips that I noticed in my journey, first as a student, then as an educator.  I hope these lessons can move beyond class examinations, and help them with life examinations. For better performance you must know yourself, the expectations of your educator/boss, your work, and your examination rules/laws/logistics.

Our program is heavily weighted on the technical aspect of education and engineering. This is excellent, but it can be improved with more social and cultural awareness and discussion. As an educator I see the various skills in my students that they oftentimes do not recognize in themselves.

My goal is always to empower for a world beyond the degree...
